A bit of context

After a long time waiting, I finally got my Punkt MP02 phone. I bought this "dumb phone" made by a Swiss company because I wanted to set a better example for my son in how I deal with digital devices. And for years I've tried to be more mindful with an iPhone, but that didn't work out.

The choice of going with such a phone is like when someone who is an alcoholic choose to go with abstinence over moderation. Sometimes it's just easier like that. Or to make it less dramatic, it's easier to not eat sweets, when you got rid of them at home.

A few things I like so far

So it's just two days that I'm using the phone, but there are already a few things I really like about the experience:

• It's sets an example: for my son, and my nephews, this phone generated conversations about moderation and digital addicition.
• It's small: the phone is really small and that's really nice both in a pocket and in the hand.
• Notes + reminders: the tiny notes app has a reminder feature which launches an alarm. That's really nice. Especially to have on the home screen a note that shows up with the gates of the trains I want to take.
• It forces new behaviors: I prepare my travels more, or I print stuff out that I want to read to my kid, I stop listening to podcasts for falling asleep, etc.

The feature that I like the most at this stage and that I wasn't thinking I would like as much is really the tiny notes app. It serves as a mini inbox of 2-3 words notes of things I want to review at the end of the day. Plus with the reminder feature the home screen serves as a mini calendar of the things I don't want to forget throughout the day.

One thing I'm not a fan so far

• Screen: the screen blacks are not super black and in the sun it gets hard to read.

These are early days and I'm still in full transition mode. But so far I'm really happy that I went with this phone. Let's see how it goes.
