How I react to the question "is this enough?"
In short: make them answer the question themselves, make them go through the grading criteria and only then fill the gaps with the evaluator hat.
Sometimes learners ask me "is this enough?". When they ask this question I first start in coach mode and only later, i- it feels necessary, I switch to an evaluator feedback mode.
Coach mode
In the coach mode I start by either asking back: "What do you think?" or by asking what is enough for them . After that I ask some short, concrete questions to help them explore the question deeper.
Often I ask the learner to go back to the grading criteria and then tell me what this means for them.
Evaluator mode
If I feel that in my evaluator role there is something missing then I announce that I'm changing role. Only then do I give my feedback.
Why I do it like this?
My goal is to help learners evaluate their work and look at it critically. It's also important to me that learners are able to "reassure" themselves and see clearly the value of their own work without needing external validation.
